This shelf has had a life before this one.
The timber here was once a house, a bookshelf, and an outdoor table. Saved from the skip, brought back to the studio, and given another go — each piece carries the marks of where it's been. That's not wear. That's the point.
The uprights are messmate with true live edges, left exactly as they came from the timber. No cleaning up, no hiding it. The shelves are pine, seated in housing joints cut directly into the uprights — no hidden hardware, nothing holding this together but craft. Along the front edge of each shelf runs a strip of merbau: deep red, dense, and as practical as it is beautiful. The lid is messmate again, this time with a merbau feature strip running through the centre, the old nail holes filled with hand-cut timber dowels.
Compact enough for a desk, a bedside table, a bathroom shelf, or a small wall space. Solid enough to last another few decades.
